It’s not really a “new” thing, standards for art were WAY lower in the early 00s than they are today and there was a lot of awful DA-tier art out there (even in works that are now considered classics like Higurashi and Tsukihime).
So it’s always been possible to make up for a lack of technical skill with sovl.
