I've been perusing the /ic/ archives and it seems there are a few claims like "I've gone from using the Intuos Pro to the iPad and it's the best decision I've ever made my art has improved a thousand fold never using that garbage again just get le iPad". However there is the exact opposite claim going around as well. What's the prevailing sentiment, who is more correct?

it might make your drawing experience more intuitive or fun
but it won't make you a better artist

I've moved from pen tablet, screen tablet (high end cintiq) and then finally to iPad.
The iPad was infinitely more enjoyable to draw with than both. You can just pick it up and draw, have it in your lap. Draw in bed etc.
I imagine a Cintiq may be better if you're a professional simply for the fact that its a bigger screen.
What people don't tell you about the cintiq/most screen tablet is they all have the anti-scratch/matte layer that dulls colors and makes pixels noticeable. This really bothered me.

Get an iPad, I enjoyed drawing so much more and it helped me gain a lot more mileage.

And in any case, the M1 is still a beast. It'll probably remain that way until the end of this decade.

8gb is enough. You don't need 16gb because by the time you need it Crapple would push an update by 2030 forcing you to upgrade anyway or the battery in the machine gets so depleted you might as well upgrade

the battery dying is gonna be an issue way sooner than 8gb of RAM. i can get almost 2 days use out of my 2020 ipad air, but that's not gonna last.

like many things in life, people have different preferences. i think the ipad works best as a complement to my full-sized display tablet, some people eschew it completely, some people hate the ipad. you'll simply have to buy one and figure out how you personally feel about it. having a portable platform for digital art is insanely useful, but if you're a homebody it'll almost definitely just sit and collect dust while you'll continue using your infinitely more powerful and productive desktop tools.

If your battery is super ran through you can turn it in at the Apple store to get a refurb of an equal or even newer model. Not a bad deal imo

I got a tablet specifically because using the Wacom Cintiq 16 I got was such a miserable fucking hassle
Three fucking cables, and connecting them all to my PC took fucking minutes
With my laptop, at least, it was way easier, but it still involved bringing out my laptop, turning it on, (which I normally do never do in the house, I have my PC after all) connecting it to the charger since it'd die in 2.5 hours otherwise, opening the program I want to use, then bringing out the Cintiq, moving it and connecting it to the laptop, then finally I can start
And since this shit house has only two tables big enough for me to use my laptop, (one in the kitchen and one in the living room, the office where I have my PC doesn't have the space) and my mom doesn't let me just let things lay around when I'm not using them, that means I have to go and put back my laptop and tablet back into the closet
Made me completely give up. I just went back to my basic screenless drawing tablet and decided I was never going to bother with screenshit ever again. It wasn't until I got a Galaxy Tab with an S Pen and saw how I could just instantly draw with it whenever and wherever I wanted, with no hassle, then I finally started drawing on a screen regularly. My Cintiq has just been gathering dust since 2023.

Yeah there was one guy that spammed it over and over especially tablet threads.

It's just wacom AES so your drawing experience is on par with Lenovo and HP tablet PCs.

Are you the retard who doesn't understand the difference between technology and its implementation? Wacom AES 1.0, 2.0 and N-Trig are all the same "AES" tech, but have nothing to do with each other.
You're basically saying a Lada drives like a Porsche because they're both ICE and sound extremely stupid to anyone who knows what those words mean.

i went from m1 ipad pro to the 24 in xppen display and its much better to draw on. ipad is really small so its hard to get shoulder work in, and the screen is way too glossy. overall its probably more important that you get the one you need more for the use case, but drawing on an actual display tablet is better.

What size iPad were you drawing on? 11 inches vs 13 inches can be a goodly difference.

If someone really covets the ease of use of a tablet, but needs a bigger screen and doesn't mind the lack of iOS, then Samsung's latest Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is 14.6 inches. Maybe it's still not enough for some people, but it's still bigger than the iPad. Apple really should make some way to use Procreate on a bigger screen. I wonder if you could somehow connect an iPad to a drawing tablet.

I dont recommend the iPad M1. I would go for one with the Pencil pro. I have the iPad Air M1.

My reasoning is simple: I hate that the pencil doesnt support hover. I find it very difficult to paint with the pencil without being able to hover and see the size and position of the stroke.

I also hate how aggressive tilt is on the pencil. I hate it.

If you are primarily a lineart guy its probably fine with the M1/older gen pencils. But coming from PC screen tablets to iPad is miserable to me.

sounds like you're retarded, tilt is like pressure, it's determined by the brush, not pencil

>I hate that the pencil doesnt support hover

Does a physical HB pencil support hover? Do you find it very difficult to draw with the HB pencil without being able to hover and see the size and position of the stroke on the paper?

I used an iPad Air 13 with Apple Pencil Pro for a year and in the end I gave up on it
At first procreate seemed convenient, but the lack of a clip mask for a whole layer folder really killed it for me
The hard pencil tip slides on the glass screen with almost no resistance, itโ€™s uncomfortable
Apple Pencil itself is really inconvenient: your fingers slip on it, and the touch controls suck compared to physical buttons
Plus you constantly feel the limitations when using iPadOS, itโ€™s not a PC replacement, itโ€™s basically just a bit upgraded iPhone

I bought an ipad in 2021, 2tb, basically the totally maxed out version so it would have the most ram.
- apple doesn't let apps use all the ram until recently
- battery drains super fucking fast after 3 years of not even using it that much
- screen is kinda small (I have the big one too)

Bought an intuos 5
- bigger size, more real estate
- no battery issue
- can sculpt on blender, draw on krita

I just don't feel the ipad was worth it for pro level work. Pick one up if you want to doodle more, but if I'm doing a serious multi-hour drawing or sculpting sesh, the ipad is a fucking toy, period. The screen just isn't big enough and apple kneecaps too much about it. And I'm PISSED about the battery life. I get one minute of screen time for one percent of discharge when I'm lightly browsing the internet or instagram, less if I'm painting or sculpting. No one has any answers about this and it happened after the two years of applecare I bought expired. It's a nice device, but for the money it's a FUCKING scam.
