Thoughts on Zakk Smith aka Zakk Sabbath? He has an MFA. Are they worth it?

Wasn't expecting to see Zak here but he is a visual artist after all. I like his stuff but I can see why many people hate him

I like some of his work. Played a couple sessions of RPGs with him on G+ in the past, he is a cool dude. Probably some kind of undiagnosed autistic from how rigid he is with standards of justice and conduct. I disagree with him on a lot of stuff but I respect the process he uses to come to his conclusions.

Anyway, a good amount of his artwork is a bit ugly to me. I'm not really a fan of caricatures and he tends to emphasize faces in that way. But that's my personal taste, not really a "it's bad" statement. I do like the more maximalist look overall, and some of his more abstract or game-related pieces, picrel, are the kinds of things I can stare at for a good while to examine all the little details. The Vornheim book is also proof the dude knows how to design shit in a very usable/tactile way, which is an excellent mindset to have.

I can't really say anything bad about his art other than that it's definitely niche which makes it "difficult". Either you like the more punk busy-looking game art, or you like the pseudoerotic caricature stuff he does for fine arts, or you don't like his work. And its 100% not going to fit as a decoration in every room due to the high contrast and saturation.

that's always going to be relative to some(one's) goal, about which you're obviously going to get a difference of opinion. as for his own, who's to say. don't know him, but looking at a small portion of his Twitter he seems quite vocal about his ideas, so perhaps he's talked about his post-secondary art education somewhere or other.

if you're really just asking us what we think of his work, for what it's worth, I'm not particularly a fan of the little I've seen here. I don't like bimbos nor the color work, but I can see why it'd have appeal to some people.

If you're living in a country with cheap or free college it's worth it I think. I see old classmates who went into Fine Arts and are having fun. (I also went to art school but it's not fun I don't have friends so just be wary if you're an autist, though in both cases you'll learn a lot anyways)
