This book is weird.
Most of Impact's stuff is kind of shit, but this one is actually quite good as an overview of western comicmaking. It's not random scam artist shit inside, there's a bunch of industry pros from back then and earlier who were consulted and the art is almost exclusively good shit.
It IS relatively small but gets a beginner up to speed on a huge number of concepts in a bit of a rapid-fire manner. Nothing is really gone into too deep but it's a great starting point for doing comics yourself IMO.

The andy schmidt book has been out of print for a long time and you can find PDF copies easily. You can peek it yourself.
It's just a good introductory reference for a lot of concepts and jargon all in one place and explains how page layout, camera angles and so on create different impressions for the reader. It also shows examples of how doing thing wrong can fuck things up. It's a bit dated in parts but the majority of it still is accurate.
Like 90% of short "comic making tips" you see online could just be a repost of some pages from this book. And the comic-focused books in the /ic/ guide are also reccomended by Schmidt at the end.

>picrel literally tells you to go paint from life constantly
photos can only get you so far. not only do cameras not capture the amount of color out in the world, but it also conditions you to adhere to what the camera captures. you dont dare deviate from what the photo shows.
master studies can get you further, but you know what all the masters did? paint from life. why did sorolla paint with a lot of purples and pinks in his ocean scenes? you wouldn't really know unless you saw purples and pinks at the beach yourself.
richards probably endured all the elements under the sun well into his old age to paint. he even recalls painting in freezing weather while his wife stays warm in the car just because he wanted to capture a certain fence scene. photos and master studies can get your far, but drawing and painting from life is really the x factor that sets you apart from other artists.

Baumann spends 6 whole pages telling you why cameras are insufficient and providing examples of how photographs from the same spot but with different settings look radically different.

The tl;dr is that a camera has a shittier range of colors and values compared to the human eye, has immobile and non-eye-like focal points once a photo is taken, alters how detail is shown and has a completely different field of view. Among other things. A camera lens is just not what an eyeball is, much less a pair of eyeballs.

You don't have to go outside though. Make art from things inside. Or sit at your window. There's something weird that happens when you are translating 3D objects into 2D that greatly assists with painting from imagination too - I think it's the fact that you have to consciously decide on a lot of the elements, as opposed to a photo doing it for you.

This isn't to say you should never do it, especially for intentional images, but as practice it's pretty necessary. Like get some anime figurines or tank models or something, a strong lamp, thendraw/paint those. Borrow your grandma's precious moments figurines or ceramic christmas diorama or nativity things. Go to a model train shop and ask if you can sit and draw the displays. Go to an antique store or jewelry shop or so on and draw the things there. There are all kinds of options to have air conditioning while drawing shit you don't own, and store owners are often pretty accommodating because it means their store isn't empty.

You don't have to paint fruit or trees.
