I'm drawing first a head, then making an array to get the correct proportions, then draw an A pose reference.

What I personally do, and I see many other artists do the same, is measure the proportions and put a tiny guideline at the feet, not a whole grid. And with some practice, you can just do it in your head and get pretty close.
