Honestly speaking, they sound almost identical to me from any point of view, like in politeness or other nuances.
Likewise, the supposed answers must be >1)nothing 2)に 3)に 4)nothing
in the question you attached, but it's far from uncommon or unnatural to say 2) without に or 3) without に depending on the situation. So I think it wouldn't be much worth meticulously memorizing their "proper usages" as textbooks say for time-related-expressions unless you have to pass some exams.

Based on this Japanese dictionary, it sometimes includes towel but it doesn't specify any size.

I'm not Japanese so I'm sure takeshi-kun has a more direct answer, but Japanese dictionaries are usually pretty decent and you can always just assume it doesn't include it until you hear a few Japanese people use it in that context. At any rate, based on タオル being a very common word, and 手拭い literally meaning handwipe, it would be very unnatural to mix them up with the exception of maybe someone using massive towels to dry their hands because they're too lazy to buy the appropriate towels.
