Hypothetically; if I got a Japanese pocket dictionary and just read through the Japanese learning and daily japanese threads every day, flashcarding every new word for a year, then moved on to 2ch and read 50 posts a day flashcarding new words, how literate could I become in Japanese (assuming I read/reference Tae Kim as needed).
Buenos días.
Odio a las mujeres.
>>211582709>just read through the Japanese learning and daily japanese threads every dayNot viable due to low amount of content, with the majority of it being boring and/or schizophrenic as well as littered with slang
You would be better off reading something actually tolerable instead

>>211583018I'm learning Akkadian.
>>211582709Memorizing random words and reading random sentences will eventually lead to progress, but it's inefficient. Consider memorizing the most frequent words first and reading/listening to content that's at your level, where you have a high chance of encountering sentences you can understand fully.

should I focus on just one language? I need arguments for one or another

>JobsMore with German, a little less but a little better paid with French. I have no idea about French and German-speaking coworkers, so it's hard to tell if they're cunts or not. The number of offers and importance of Spanish is growing, and it's similar to French and I could possibly learn it easier and faster in the future.
>EmigrationGerman-speaking countries pay better, but French-speaking countries are warmer. Other profitable countries have languages related to German and I could possibly learn them easier and faster.
>WomenI don't think some are better than others, guys from all countries complain about their women, but they're all similarly fucked up and great, depending on the person, just in slightly different ways. You can pick up in both French and German, because knowing both is equally impressive and both languages are either beloved or hated
>>211583920nothingburger. Nothing can replace live interaction with a human being. But it is also an argument for learning more culturally exotic languages to be able to connect with people with whom simple translation will not help much due to mental differences.
>>211584936You don't need to speak french or german to attract french or german women. You just have to be attractive and tall.
>>211585061knowing the native language is really important to meeting the normal girls though. like in japan you're not getting any normal japanese girls if you don't know japanese, just the weird WMAF fetishist girls. who really goes for a tourist who doesn't even speak your language? it's just weirdos.
>>211585167If you're attractive enough, your language skills won't matter. A so-called traditional woman wouldn't date a foreigner, even if he speaks the language fluently. I don't think traditional women exist anymore, unless she's spent her whole life in a secluded village without internet access and was homeschooled.
>>211585565if you're attractive enough to literally have random girls drop everything and bend backward for you, you'd be a male model. if you're attractive enough, literally nothing matters.
>>211585565I am rather a person with a beautiful soul. In general, you're right, but the attractiveness also depends on small things, and I had to look for arguments for one or the other language anyway
>>211585565I talked about what women from these countries are like and about the attractiveness of knowing German or French language in general, not for native speakers of these languages, as two separate things. >>211587057yeah but we have to talk about what we mean by attractive/looks.
if you're a white guy and you go to China or Indonesia or India, you're getting bonus points that you wouldn't get in say the UK or France, or Sweden or Russia or wherever else it's common.
>>211587249because those girls fuck every white guy at the tourist bar and they're mentally ill. it's not cool IRL.
>>211587262Very true. I actually think I would do better in the US because I look Nordic (blue eyes, blond hair), which Asians, Latinas, and other brown women like. But here, I only have white women, so I get no bonus points.
>>211587547contrary to /int/ memes there are a lot of blonde hair/blue eyed people in the US and it's not exotic. nobody gets bonus points here. you need to go somewhere that no blonde hair blue eyed guy goes, like bangeladesh tier sea of little brown people
>>211587782Really? I thought people who looked like that were mostly found in the Midwest, where Germans and Scandinavians migrated. I guess you don't have to see people like that all the time for them to seem 'common'. Here, maybe one out of ten people looks like me, so women probably see at least a dozen guys who look similar to me every day.

>>211588878fetishizing is not the same as being attracted. it's a mental illness, and i'm not interested in fucking a girl who fucked the last 10 guys who walked into a tourist bar just because we have the same physical features.

>>211583598Serbbro, have you ever had the experience of watching one series in your TL for several months, getting really used to their voices and the way they speak, then having a sudden loss in comprehension level when you start watching a new series?
>>211592654Sure, if the new series has characters talking in a way that I'm not familiar with or used to. Like, the way people talk in dubs and actual native series is different, the latter has a lot more slang and unique expressions that you have to wrap your head around the first time you hear them. I'd say my listening comprehension is pretty stable, but I tend to watch a lot of different content and get through it quickly. You should probably avoid sticking to one piece of content for that long.
>>211593330Yeah, you're right. The first few series I watched were pretty long anime series, and whenever I got to the last season or so I would understand nearly 100%, but after starting the next series on my list I would notice a drop in comprehension, and repeat. Maybe I should just pick shorter series. I have an autistic urge to only watch one thing until I finish the last episode.
I (a native English-speaking bookworm) have been adding every English word I come across that I either haven't seen before or haven't retained the meaning of to an "advanced English" Anki deck with the occasional image reference and pronunciation audio.
With something like 600k words in the language, there should be something here for English learners of all levels.

Does that answer your question?
I've really been struggling to find CI at my level. I tried doing shit like watching native level content with click-to-translate on the subtitles but its a giant hassle since a lot of content in the language I'm studying doesn't have target-language subtitles (only english). And the click-to-translate doesn't work very well with unrelated agglutinative languages.
Recently I've just been doing semi-intensive listening where I watch videos I like with english subtitles on but turning them on and off and rewinding a lot. So if its an hour video it'll usually take me 1.5 to 2 hours to finish. Often I'll watch a segment with subtitles and then without or vice versa. I try to keep subtitles off at least 2/3rds of the time.
I was just doing this out of laziness but I actually like it much better. I tried doing this with japanese recently (a language I haven't studied and don't know at all) and it worked perfectly fine, was able to pick up new words and structures and remember them no problem.
and its way more enjoyable
>watching stuff you want right from day 1, no boring CI
>"by native for native" content from the beginning so youre learning about target culture, not just the language
>no having to fish for transcripts or target language subtitle files
>no having to pause to look up words
this is my new input method now fuck CI fuck glosses

>>211601601DeepL is better than Google. At least for what I use it for (French <-> English and Japanese <-> English). If you're translating from German to Russian then maybe it isn't very good. Different translators use different models and strategies for different language pairs, sometimes using an intermediary language. It just depends on the language pair. For example, Google translates from Belarusian to English using Russian as an intermediary. It'll translate Belarusian into Russian then the Russian into English. It's obviously less accurate than a translator that translates directly from Belarusian into English.
It's possible DeepL uses an intermediary between German and Russian whereas Google translates directly between the two. It just depends. Experiment with yandex, google, and DeepL, and choose whichever you think works best.
For my langs DeepL destroys Google, especially when it comes to translating idioms.

>>211602096Speaking of French, I tested DeepL out with a few things where google had fumbled previously and it nailed all tests. I wonder if I should actually use it or if I should stick with google which forces me to basically look through the words one at a time and make sure I agree with the translation choices for each.

also if we look at the example of Chinese girls (the vast majority of East Asians), there are also several drawbacks

>>211604194just sentence mine for new cards
>>211604427taiwan/korea/japan are usually what people are thinking of first and foremost when talking about east asia
>>211600642Yeah an old piece of wisdom I got from a boomer whose methods were all from the 70s once told me to get a text or subtitles in both languages, read the english once with the TL audio and really focus on understanding the “English meaning” once, and then never look at the English again while doing subsequent reps in the TL. And he used this for Chinese and eventually became an interpreter and professor before the internet, so you know it works.
I copied it for my textbook studies and it sped things up dramatically to just do the english once (with mandarin audio) and just trust that from then on I could pretty much figure out what a chapter or piece of input said nearly always.
It hasn’t made the learning speed dramatically faster, but it’s made it far more comfortable and easy to keep up.

>>211623236Practically speaking there’s not much difference between ankigooning and duolingo if you’re disciplined. Its just that it bills itself as more than a vocabulary teacher.
Someone could do very well for themselves if they seriously dedicated an hour a day to grind out Duolingo Spanish and then just switched to native CI and a reference grammar for reading.
i dont know how to say "to conflate" in spanish and i will NOT look it up
>>211626383you can unarguably learn way more vocab through input and ankigooning than duolingo will ever teach you
>>211626383>Someone could do very well for themselves if they seriously dedicated an hour a day to grind out Duolingo Spanish and then just switched to native CI and a reference grammar for reading.Esto es lo que hice yo, menos lo de la gramatica. Me llevó un año aprender español pero es muy parecido al italiano.
>>211626639Yeah so you obviously misread my post. I said duolingo + input, but you said ankigooning + input> duolingo alone, which is not what I said.
>>211627024I was thinking more about English speakers, mainly so they can flesh out their understanding of conjugations a little more thoroughly.
>>211627240still anki has the advantage that it lets you add the words you find while inputting so you can remember them easier
>>211627240>I was thinking more about English speakers, mainly so they can flesh out their understanding of conjugations a little more thoroughly.I don't know. Maybe you could recite verb conjugations like they make you do in school (io faccio, tu fai, egli fa...), maybe it will prime you to recognize the sound as correct.
This if you are interested in speaking over listening, and even then I would wait until you are pretty good at undestanding.
Also, regarding Anki, I think it's way too overrated. I'm using it for japanese and it's very hard to balance the amount of context that you put on the front. If you put nothing (like the kaishi deck everyone slobbers over) you are basically learning the language on nightmare more.
If you put too much however you risk learning the context instead of the word. It's happened to me with the word flashcard for "marriage", I learned that the context sentence "Next month, my younger sister will do XXX" with "marriage" instead of actually learning the word.
>>211627321Yes absolutely, and it can be a lot quicker in terms of word count, so it’s 100% a superior word teacher. But Duolingo does work. I think the focus should be less on the perfect program and just encouraging people to consistently do something that exposes/reviews an adequate amount of new words.
Anki is inferior to actual physical paper flashcards
>>211627578Pre-made physical flashcards are inferior to making your own.
>>211627525>I learned that the context sentence "Next month, my younger sister will do XXX" with "marriage" instead of actually learning the word.My experience exactly with the HSK decks. I just got a spoken/character reader and found when I came back to Anki yesterday that I pretty much instantly recognized anything that I had already read in the textbook, review is Anki’s real ideal purpose, not learning new words on the spot.
So basically, it’s rough at early stages to get to the point where you can hit graded readers, but then it’s an incredibly convenient SRS once you are largely reviewing words you’re seeing in texts/conversations already.
>>211627931Yes, of course I meant making your own
Just like you are supposed to make your own Anki deck
>>211627548i honestly dont see how duolingo could encourage anyone but children. its just childish. i guess i like anki more because its more serious or solemn or smth
>>211627578until you break them or loose them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn8TiVd_lH4
any of you guys watch this guy? I enjoy his vids about english
>>211627578The advantage of Anki is the SRS algorithm, you're doing less work for the same amount of benefit.
>>211621572Crazy how i can understand pretty much all of this without ever having studied a latin language
>>211626639i honestly dont think i know how to say it in NL either
>>211628666interesting video. I knew about Rob Words, but not this guy
>>211630341Is this the reason why people learn russian?
What makes Japanese hard really?
Is it really just the writing system?
Does it have any nonsensical grammar things going on?
>>211635386+ fastest spoken language
>>211635851>only slightly faster than SpanishI hear Cubans talk all the time and I've heard other Hispanics complain that they speak too fast
>>211633612its better to learn belarusian or ukrainain so you dont have to deal with ugly asiatic russoids
>t. learned russian and had to move to central asia
>>211615518Yes. As I've said many times, there is Zero reason to learn a language (other than english) unless you just like suffering for years on end in pursuit of a pointless goal. This makes you ultra based, but it's no surprise it's unpopular.
>>211613710>lingunoseems based but is this little penguin going to try to make me gay like the owl did?
I didn't speak TL at the festival this year at all, unlike last year.
Any good websites or apps for learning French through writing out sentences? I have just used Duolingo at the moment and it feels too simple. Maybe a textbook would be better? Or I guess I could watch one of those show/news things and write the sentences out
>>211637827I'm not really clear on what you're asking for here, if you want to learn by copying text then just like look up a news article and copy that all down by hand. If you mean listening exercises, hear a sentence then write what you heard, try this thing which anon linked earlier
>https://www.linguno.com/I admit I just tried it today after his rec but the listening exercises seem great
