I have a problem where I am interested in many languages, but have trouble deciding one to actually start with. I took two years of Spanish and three years of Latin in high school and was the top student in those classes, writing stories while some were still struggling to pronounce and comprehend simple words, so I know I can learn anything I put my mind to.

Anything below C is worthless, and you should have at least 1 language at native level otherwise you're a retard no matter what. Assuming your "lose all knowledge" includes NL. Therefore, I am forced to spend 4 points each on English, Chinese, and the last one is tough - Spanish wins on pure speaker count but, while I have lost all existing knowledge, I can still gain new knowledge and spanish is relatively easy to learn from english. #1 fact to know about learning french from english is that reading is easy, lots of shared root words and the like so you can sketch out a basic concept with minimal effort, but production is a bitch because the grammar is a lot different and listening is nightmare mode because a dozen different verb conjugations will all sound the exact same and they drop like half the letters in every word when speaking even beyond that. so tldr start listening practice instantly if you want to have hope

Well... if I keep Portuguese and English that only leaves me with about 5 points.

Talk to friends, watch videos, listen to music, do flashcards, etc. I don't use any goy textbook/course/class. You just input and output everyday and use a dictionary when you get stuck.

I'm basically native in Japanese so I don't need to learn anything about hanzi besides memorizing 1 more pronunciation and some different shapes. The only thing you can have is the equivalent of those memories in your culture like your first beer, a band in your friend's parents' garage etc. but in Western culture there is also more room for that kind of thing when you are older, whereas the work culture in Japan and the cultural and language barrier is so big that you will probably end up in your expat bubble anyway. Even at work in your own culture it is easier to make friends and acquaintances because you share at least some of the common experiences and tastes shaped by the system you were raised in. And even though I experienced some anime-like things during my school life, I regret that I wasn't a weeb back then

Some languages with articles do this and some don't. Possessive adjectives predate the existence of articles in IE languages so some IE languages that have articles today evolved them in such a way that possessive adjectives basically became a type of article alongside the other words that became articles while others kept them as adjectives. In French and Spanish, "mine", "yours" and so on are still strictly adjectives that need an article if used as a noun phrase which you wouldn't do in English. Doing anki sometimes feels like brain surgery or like it's rewiring my brain. I'll be crushing reviews then suddenly remember some random shit I did in like 4th grade that I haven't thought about in forever. Definitely French, but really no language has great synergy with English IMO. If you’re taking about advanced study for high literacy (i.e. expanding your literary vocabulary) then I would say the spelling/phonetic shifts in French renders the immediate carryover into English inferior to Latin.

But overall you’d probably get the most value out of just studying Romance-rooted words *within English* in a dedicated fashion rather than trying to take on an entire new language with substantially different grammar.

IMO the best way to get advanced English is just to read advanced English. In my opinion, linguistic carryover helps the most for intermediate level carryover, since basic stuff is somewhat unintelligible (if it weren’t they wouldn’t be different languages); and advanced stuff can be peculiar to the language in question. For example Latin Tenebris vs. English Tenebrous may hint to the meaning really well, but the usage is totally different since the Latin is a noun and the English is an adjective.

Still though, probably just written Latin, with a focus less on grammar and more of a focus on tackling intermediate texts that prove highly influential on English to just learn as much vocab as possible (so basically the Vulgate).

Probably going to Japan for a few weeks. I have almost exactly 6 months. I’ve had plenty of exposure through media, and I spent a month there before and learned a little while I was there.

I’m like A1 in Chinese right now, so I’m thinking I should totally ignore formal study of Kanji and just learn the readings through input since I’ve already learned a lot of Chinese characters. I’m probably just gonna mix an input/conversation heavy vocab resource (maybe assimil) while making Anki cards for phrases so I can just learn as much internalized usable vocab as quick as possible. If I can rush through Assimil A1 in a little over a few months I guess I can just inputmaxx more after that. I’m just trying to come up with a study method that gives as much practically useful Japanese ASAP while still building that comprehension base so I can have some conversational ability when I’m out there. I’m optimistic, Japanese people are the most open to speaking their language with foreigners of anyone I’ve ever met, last time I was there people were incredibly patient and I had whole conversations understanding maybe 250 words and being able to speak 50 comfortably.

Any advice? Anyone done anything similar? (I.E. rushing comprehension in a language for travel in a way that’s not too intense so as to not hurt other languages or work.) I’m in grad school and already putting an hour a day minimum into Chinese.
