It's too cold at that point. Russians a couple hundred make the trip every year usually will hide in the Aleutians sometimes to get a break and go further down even try to run to Canada. The smart ones just cross over straight to Alaska and find a military base to claim asylum to and they get it. I lived there years ago. You just realize how dull most Russians are when you realize how actually easy it is for them to get asylum here via Alaska.
