Depends on the prison. My local womens prison is getting sued because they took video of women showering and getting strip searched

Dangerous, with sadistic guards who allow prisonere to smuggle in phones, firm gangs, and beat up/kill other prisoners. The gay rape is a fake meme made up to try and humiliate prisoners.
They are also a lot of times used as slave labor the prison profits from, while paying them pennies for it so they can claim "its not slavery! They get paid :)".
