Germany has never been a particularly learned nation. Even our "best and brightest" are usually hack sciolists. It's been this way since the anicent days. Culture is a product of leisure, which is scorned in our grasping merchant culture. If only we'd remained an agricultural people. I mean, look at the natural bounty that surrounds us. We would've cultivated great minds and great characters, a people who love peace and truth.

I think the historical German dominance in organic chemistry and medicine during the 1870s-1920s is pretty cool
