The arctic waters and polar region between Russia, the U.S, Greenland, Iceland and Norway are considered exceptionally strategically valuable by all sides. When people in Kyiv run to bomb shelters, they do so based on intelligence gathered by the infamous radar domes in Vardø, Norway, capable of tracking Russian bombers as they take off and head for Ukraine. The Russians will periodically do mock bombing runs toward these radars, turning away at the last minute before entering Norwegian airspace.
Most people look at the map and think ballistic missiles would fly east/west across the Atlantic ocean on their way to their targets.... for crying out loud...
And Svalbard, are you kidding me? Not a week goes by without Russia complaining that Norway is "militarizing" it and wanting to strengthen their claim (there's a huge satellite downlink facility which is being used strictly for cicilian purposes.....right?).
There's literally a Russian village IN Svalbard, and they love to make their presence known. Pictures of armed Russian troops in arctic surroundings and tagged with "Svalbard" surfaced online a few years ago.Even the Chinese have been testing the waters there too, to see how much shit they could get away with (uniformed personell ++) before Norway responded.
Russian officials will now turn up at WW2 memorials in Northern Norway, remove wreaths laid down by Norwegian officials, and lay down their own wreaths instead - after being told their presence is not wanted in the first place.
U.S military hardware is stored in huge numbers in our mountain bunkers. We have USMC forces permanently based in Trøndelag county. U.S. nuclear subs make regular port calls in Tromsø. We have Rivet Joint flights crossing our airspace to snoop north of Murmansk. Etc, etc, etc....
Natural isolation? Neutral international policies? Pressure cooker waiting to blow is more like it.
