nevertheless, taiwan is probably the east asian country where white people can be treated the best when they travel
in south korea or japan, white people are often banned or refused entry to stores, restaurants etc
here, spending money does not mean you are treated the same as local customers

I noticed this when I had a mainland Chinese gf. Initially I thought she had a problem with them because she avoided their culture but then I saw how differently Hong Kongers and Taiwanese treated us.

In a way I get it though. Mainland Chinese are uncivilised and even the most open provinces produce brainwashed people who may or may not be spies from an embassy.

Yes taiwanese were colonized by Japan so taiwan shares a lot of cultural similarities to Japan. By the time the cultural revolution in China happened Taiwan which under the Qing was the poorest part of China became richer and more developed than even the wealthiest parts of china.

Because Taiwan has literally always been until recently under foreign occupation. First the dutch, then the Qing (Taiwan was independent from them before they conquered taiwan and the Qing were foreigners) then the Japanese and finally the ROC which was mainlander occupation of Hakka and hokien people. So they loved the japanese that actually treated them the best and gave them the most freedom. ONLY in the 1990s did taiwan finally become ruled by taiwanese
