All you need to understand is that the real, practical hierarchy rarely matched what Brahmins wrote in their texts, where they conveniently placed themselves at the top.
In reality, the hierarchy looked more like this:
Rulers > Wealthy landowners and merchants > Priests ~ Middle-class merchants > Landless laborers > Dalits.
Same as in Europe.
Iโll illustrate this with an example from my region, showing how ruling castes treated Brahmins:
A man from a ruling caste once publicly beheaded an innocent Brahmin to consecrate a newly built temple as a talisman of "good fortune" before founding his kingdom. No Brahmin dared to protest the murder. Within decades, his lineage established a dynasty that lasted over three centuries. A Brahmin could never have murdered a member of a ruling caste in public and lived, let alone gone on to found a powerful dynasty afterward.
