I just simply cannot understand why, on God’s fucking earth, would anyone choose to willingly follow him. Sorry for the ESL blogpost but here were go. First, let's make a comparison with the other chaos options.

Chaos undivided is mostly for those that seek personal power and glory but also don’t want to subject their souls to one particular god. It’s the less rewarding and hardest option, but also the one that gives you the most freedom. Wanna cool chaos powers and minions but also keep you soul for yourself because your ego is too big or simply don’t wanna go ball deep into chaos? This option is for you, all you have to do is to satisfy all 4 gods. There’s also the Word Bearers, but those follow the complete pantheon out of pure religious zealotry. In the end, to not fuck up all you have to do is to serve all 4 chaos Gods equally, how big your devotion is irrelevant as long as you split it correctly.

Khorne is quite is quite easy to understand. You just must desire to unleash destruction on those or the system that committed injustices against you. It’s mostly about resentment, hate and seeking revenge. I can see how those that usually get massacred, subjected or slaved would quickly start worshiping this entity (Palestinians 100% would). That or you were a bloodthirsty psychopath since the beginning or simply wanted to become a better warrior (although this last one can also fall into Slaanesh). And when it comes about making Khorne happy/angry? Just straight up kill and burn nonstop and never chicken out, use dirty tricks or have mercy. It’s that easy.

It’s no surprise that unlike the rest of the 4 chaos gods, all traitor Emperor Children willingly chose from the start to worship her, because they simply wanted more and couldn’t say no. That’s what makes Slaanesh also terrifying; she knows better than anyone how to convince you. And once you are a slaaneshi on hard drugs? There’s no way to turn back. How to make her happy? Keep indulging and seeking new deprived desires and egoistical highs. How to anger her? Stop indulging, ruin the party or trigger her fickle sense of fashion when she’s having a bad day.

I think Tzeentch is a failed concept as a Chaos God. There’s really no point of worshipping him. It’s impossible to make him happy or get what you want no matter how dedicated or competent you are.

That cool mutation he rewarded you? Enjoy becoming a chaos spawn. Hell, the Thousand Sons hated Tzeentch “””gifts””” so much they unleashed the rubric of Ahriman, turning them into NPCs.
That cool brotherhood to share and seek knowledge with? Biggest backstabbers on universe, even by chaos standards.
Cool warp powers? Just become a Chaos undivided sorcerer, its way less risky. Nurgle and Slaanesh can also deliver. It’s not like Tzeentch’s sorcerers are the even stronger than other chaos champions.
You just wanna follow him for the sake of it? It’s the ficklest of all gods combined (way more than Slaanesh) and will fuck you over no matter how terrible or great you do.
You have absolutely no security or stability, it’s worst than investing in crypto, but unlike bitcoins the rewards aren’t even that great, since the rest of chaos could give you the same under better and more predictable conditions. And how will he reward you? With more treachery that would fuck you over, trickiness that will turn you insane or changing you so much you become a chaos spawn.

Egrimm van Horstmann is a good story I think for Tzeentch. Basically was a combination of thinking he could outsmart the God of treachery and also he had a goal that he was extremely compelled to accomplish and willing to sacrifice anything to do so. In the end of course yeah it's retarded to think you'll ever win in any bargain with him which ultimately makes him not such a great concept. It would be common knowledge not to make a deal with him because you always, ALWAYS lose in the end. It's just a worse version of the "deal with the devil" idea. It works in cases where someone is desperate or just doesn't give a fuck about the consequences. Like selling your soul to get a chance at revenge makes sense from a character motive standpoint. One random idea would be maybe making him more of a businessman negotiator who is actually possible to end up with a mutually beneficial arrangement if you're very very careful. Like great power but you have to perform some conduct or sacrifice regularly and if you miss even once you're doomed for breaching the contract.

But I think in general the Chaos gods are a bit undercooked in conception. If you're gonna split chaos into just 4 themes, I think something more abstract should've been used for each of the gods. As it is feels a bit weird that we just have
1) raw violence/anger
2)pestilence and disease
3) secrets/plotting
4) pleasure and excess

As the only gods. Even using the in universe explanation of the nature of chaos it isn't exactly clear why other negative undercurrents in sentient consciousness/unconsciousness didn't form other gods. Also as you stated there's even overlap. An obsessive warrior could fall under Khorne or Slaneesh. In fact since Slaneesh is just excess in general, pretty much everything can fall under Slaneesh if it's taken to an extreme. Like where does "fear of dark" fall? Or "fear of loneliness"? How about "grief from experiencing loss", "jealousy/envy", "fear of death", "pride" fall?

I went through a lore binge phase and still occasionally do. Played some of the games. I hope to see more worldbuilding inspired by it by other creators in the future. It's sorta like superheros to me: they'll always have a place in my heart, but a lot of the stuff I grew up with is for kids, and I'd like people to make a more mature version of what I liked as a kid that might be extremely boring 80% of the time to 8 year olds.
