When my father went to Paris, he was surprised to find that, contrary to their reputation, all the Frenchmen he met were very polite and helpful when he spoke to them in broken French. However, if he said a single English word, they'd turn around and walk away. This was decades ago, so perhaps things have changed.

Being monolingual is lame. I have always been nice with people trying to learn french, it's not an easy language despite the similarities with English and making efforts to learn is commendable.

The similarities between English and French screw me over since there are so many faux amis. Also doesn’t help that when I learn a new phrase, I come to find out that they only say it in Quebec . And apparently some phrases and words are pretty outdated now.
