You usually get one pack of biscuits once at the end of the year, even though you're supposed to get one daily as a "supplemental nutrition plan" to "help" financially disadvantaged students, but school administrators just keep the boxes they get from the government to resell them to supermarkets, and only give one packet out to each student per year to say "hey technically we gave them some!"

Circled in picrel is the only one I've gotten in my town:

Been a while since I've had a school lunch but this is generally considered a staple - UHO (universal brown sauce) with slab of mystery meat or finely minced offal and side of overcooked rice or undercooked potatoes. Plus weak tea, and chicken soup (weak chicken broth with approximately two pieces of chicken skin and five noodles swimming in the bowl).

Similar to our highschools then. But takeout places also knew setting up near a highschool was solid business, so just about every highschool here has a takeout place within walking distance and we'd all just go out and buy proper fish and chips for lunch (since the school cafeteria fish and chips was usually kinda bland).

Here's actual pics from Swedish schools.
Our free lunches kids get everyday.

As someone who was a fat kid, the school lunch was the best time of the day for me.

No in Egypt at least we use "basha" from the Turkish pasha. Hey at least it's better than being called a khawaja (foreigner with the connotation of infidel) like Mark Twain was treated by the native Palestinians no?

Well, it wasn't exactly "free food", it was communal canteen adjacent to the school and the meals were partially paid by the parents and partially subsidized by state. Obviously some part of the budget was diverted and best cut of the ingredients pilfered by canteen staff, so what you finally got on the plate was less than what your parents paid for.

>>211826065
We had this all the way until 2010s. But it was only this bad at primary, secondary, and high school, college canteen was decent quality and multiple-choice. And still reasonably cheap.

I wonder when we went from the old "grab a plate, lunch lady will fill it" system to the buffet style?
Born 91 here and we had the buffet from 4th grade and forward (if I remember right).

>Skolbuffet introduceras i svenska skolor våren 1987 i Stockholms kommun med stor framgång, skolverkets försök att modernisera skolans lunch hade då gått igenom flera testversioner för motverka den ökande mängden barn som väljer att inte äta under skoltimmar. Det nya systemet visade sig vara mycket populärt både bland elever och lärare och spreds snabbt till resten av landet och är idag standard i svenska skolor

1987. According to Aftonbladets old article.

Is this ghetto school food or sumpin? I remember the middle school I went to
(in an affluent suburb of a large Texan city) had a cafeteria with several options, including some damn-good tomato pies (abizz), fried chicken, and I think also some cheap-ass "healthy" sandwiches.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You think there are no Turks here? There's Turkish, Lebanese and Greek restaurants all over the place in Bucharest. They have tzatziki, tahini, curry, garlic yoghurt and whatever the fuck sauces you want. There's even cheese kebab for the fat fucks who can't live without having melted cheese on everything. It all depends on which kebab place you pick.
