Actually, one of the reasons to learn a foreign language for an anglophone might be to enhance privacy. It must really weird when you aren't able to discuss anything with anybody in public without everybody understanding what you talk about.

Mandarin is impossible to self-teach, but you can be fluent in a year if you actually move to China or Taiwan.

You also don't need to learn to handwrite characters because of modern input methods. You just need to only know how to read, recognize and type characters, which is way easier than writing them by hand.

For employment purposes just knowing how to speak a language is actually useless for 99% of roles. Being able to translate dense technical and legal documents is a skill most speakers, including native ones, don't have.
You need to go to a University program that will have you translating texts.
