What caused the islamic aesthetics to become so ugly? When I look at it from a historic perspective they had some nice looking architecture up to the 14th century, but everything since then seems ugly.

People stopped being impressed by geometric patterns shortly after the design of machine precision though it enjoyed a last surge in popularity in the 1920s and 1930s in the art deco movement.

I am not talking about having a certain kind of aesthetics. They don't seem to possess any sense for beauty.

Oh... Poverty and then tackiness in psychological response to their self-associated poverty even when they get rich. They'll get better again if they survive long enough. Also they're starting to get cool minimalists designs and being experimental in some parts. It's hard to associate it with them though because everything is sorta influenced by global ideas which are associated with western thought. There was a time when we would have associated mathematics with them though and now we do not, so things can change.

Wahabism was born in response to the then ottoman rulership trying to remove power from the priestly class of the empire in their attempts to modernize the nation. It's a relatively modern movement that didn't see wide spread hold up untill the late 1800s. Before the secularization of Europe during roughly the same period, the muslim world was far more tolerant to alternative religions and the like than their western counterparts

Wahabism had clear arab conservative undertones. The priestly class was largely arab and you can view it as "their" pillar of society
