Chile is the only country in Latin American history that has had a democracy that lasted more than 100 years.
The entire continent experienced coups d'รฉtat in the same period (something unknown to us).
Our first coup d'รฉtat was by Pinochet in 1973,
and he is the most remembered figure on the continent (no one remembers the Argentine dictators, of which there were several).
Ironically, he is the only dictator who was not overthrown; he left power to make way for democracy.
20 years of democracy and 15% growth in 20 years.
Until the arrival of Piรฑera and the social uprising (he died, but allowed the country to grow by 4%).
In a third-world country, it would have been an overthrow, or, as in Argentina, where the president escaped by helicopter.
Here, a plebiscite was held to define the path forward. The people elected a national plebiscite to define a new Constitution.
The constitution was rejected.
It was considered too extreme.
A leftist man took office, but he respected norms, laws, and international treaties.
And now a right-wing government is coming, worried about fiscal fatigue. This isn't common in the developing world.
Chile is an anomaly.
Chile is Chile.
