Iran is extremely diverse and its modern nationalism without the king wholly depends on a centralized Shia Muslim theocracy. Without that, there is very little keeping Iran with its current borders - although that is exactly why Israel wants to topple the current government, so that there's a civil war and the rump state becomes useless
