I haven't heard anyone say the Russian and Albanian ones, there are several missing
>sit like a (circumcized) turk
Be useless
>pass through like a turkish graveyard
Ignore something
>go (complain) to the Armenian priest
I don't care

We have this with the Turkish cemetery and the Swiss clock.
>developed like Albanian tourism
can refer to anything, to a girl who has no tits for example.
>he acts like an Englishman
when someone pretends to be naive and doesn't know something in order to deceive, and then does something beyond all expectations.
We have self-explanatory expressions - >drinks like a Russian
>smokes like a Turk
>smells like a Gypsy
>works like a Negro
>stupid like a Bosnian
When someone is stingy we say they are Jewish. For example: 'he will never pay for a round!
>What a Jew!'
There is a saying
>she is so young, and already a Hungarian/Slovenian
meaning slut.
I think that's all.

I like this, such a Balkan train of thought. In the Balkans everything south/east of you is backward and north/west of you is more developed, thus more western, thus women are more liberated, a common stereotype we have of westerners.

>work like a nigger
I'm not clear how they use it in your countries, but, believe it or not, I've only known "working like a nigger" to mean something like engaging in difficult, menial, and unappreciated work.

From the first reference I could find, "Folk Speech From Southeastern Illinois", published in 1946, on page 94:
https://sci-hub.se/10.2307/27649837
>If you work hard "You work like a nigger," or "Work like a slave," or "Work till you are dragged out," "Work like a dog," or "Work like a nigger at an election."

>"Work like a nigger at an election."
What is the origin of this saying?
Anonymous Croatia No.211888916 [Report]
>>211888341
Yes, that's the meaning, when someone does hard work like a slave. Btw, we don't have the word 'nigger', nor a slang insult for them. We use the word 'black' (crnac) for black people. In Croatian, that saying is 'radim kao crnac'.
Anonymous United States No.211889117 [Report]
>>211888783
Honestly, that one confused me too. I'd guess it's either about how, historically, black candidates for elected office might have otherwise been at a disadvantage, or how black voters would be more likely to have to pass a literacy test before being able to vote. For reference:

I have noticed some idioms tend to switch target countries depending on who is saying it. There's apparently an English exit, a French leave, a Polish goodbye, an Irish goodbye and they all mean the same thing.
A similar thing happened with syphilis where it became known as the Neapolitan disease, the French disease or the Polish disease, depending on where a country first got it from.

Half of these are mistranslated. I've heard the Turkish job one as a Bulgarian job and the Russian film as Soviet film.
