They don’t have to be great (although music dorks will notice when they are), but if they’re really incompetent or absent, good luck with anything resembling a live rock band.
Bassists can get away with next to nothing, or be left out entirely, in a lot of bands, but an exceptional bassist can be the most important part of a group’s sound. And in many genres, only an idiot with neither taste nor functional hearing would claim that they’re inessential.

Nice guy, truly shit drummer, ruined a lot of songs. He switched to bass eventually and actually started adding value.
