Something / avant-garde invents some technique, then some other art filmmaker adopts it but in a less strange / avant-garde movie, then this kind of movie ends up inspiring a mainstream filmmaker who uses some weird elements in his movie to make it stand out. Then it often happens that a more artsy filmmaker sees something new arise from the combination of mainstream appeal and artistic quality and can adapt that element into something new and avant-garde as well.
This is why mainstream filmmakers often have at least a couple of arty films in their favourites while arty filmmakers often have a surprise mainstream flick in their favourites. It's all important but pretentious elitists from either side (who are basically never filmmakers or any kind of artist themselves) love to play sides like it's console wars.
