They have done something you very rarely see an entire population being able to do which is to recognize the mistakes of the past and apologize for them. In today's world in 99% of cases you will just see countries going "it didn't happen but they deserved it".
Germany is very special in this regard and I feel like too rarely it gets the recognition and appreciation that it deserves.

Yeah they take it seriously. They have plaques and monuments EVERYWHERE in Germany and Austria. Their constitution places protecting the dignity of man as the state's first duty, and they take it seriously.

Complete opposite of the truth, East Germany was nazi central, the DDR parliament was full of ex nazis whereas being a low ranking guard or accountant tied to pre-1945 politics was a big no-no in the BRD.
Which isn't' surprising since the northeast were the core regions of the Nazis in the Reich and the ideologies are 90% overlapping.
