as a stupid american with no knowledge of history or geography, whenever i look at a map, i can't help but think that it doesn't make sense that germany, austria, denmark, the netherlands are switzerland aren't all one country. they all speak either german or a weird german offshoot and it would just look really good on a map. i'm just saying.

Are you retarded? They were one of the duchies of the HRE since forever, the Emperors for the entire second half of the thing, and leaders of the German confederation after that. What's now Austria was specifically referred to as "German-Austria" up until 1918 to differentiate it from the other Habsburg domains. They were no more separate from Germany that Brandenburg or Saxony were, arguably less so seeing how they've been the leader of this clown show more often than not

Danish king who was also duke of Slesvig and duke of Holstein, was sovereign in Slesvig but subordinate to Holy Roman Emperor in Holstein which was 95% Low German speaking

Slesvig was this multilingual melting pot where Danish, Frisian and Low German all were spoken
I have a theory the strange pronunciation of Danish compared with Swedish and Norwegian might be a Frisian influence (soft consonants etc.) but Slesvig used to be a trilingual zone
