They realized they can make 1000x more money doing white collar crime than shooting and killing each other in the streets for smuggling cigarettes and with prostitution, so you never see them in the street and never hear anything, and you live under the impression that they don't exist anymore. Kinda like Yakuza

Sicilia mafia though is much less strong than it was in the past, they were late to realize what I said earlier, started doing bombings and blowing stuff up and killing civilians cartel style in the 80s-90s so the state really clamped them down. They still exist but they're a local thing in Sicily.
