I usually save around £100 per month, but 1-2 times a year, some random big expense will come and wipe it all out (e.g. this year, I needed a new washing machine).

Better than the average American who has no life savings at all and is one paycheck away from becoming homeless. Our social security has become a defacto pension plan which is what it was never supposed to be. It was supposed to be a welfare system to help out with money and NOT be the only source of your income when you age.
