How do Europeans communicate with each other?
is there a default language? Say a Finn travels to Italy or whatever for business or holiday.

We're taught 1 - 4 foreign languages in school.

We need more "bridge languages" to facilitate communication between similar languages. Like how the multiple mutually-unintelligible Arabic variants have Modern Standard Arabic.
The Romance languages should have Latin as its bridge language, the Slavic languages should use Inter-Slavic, and there should also be an Inter-Germanic language made if there isn't one already.

Latin or esperanto obviously

We all talk in our own languages and just interpret what the other party is saying based on gestures and stereotypes.

I like the idea of picking a "central" language that is the equally comprehensible to speakers of related languages, instead of nonsense like Latin (not comprehensible to anyone despite historical ties) or Interslavic (soulless garbage like Esperanto)
For Slavic this is Slovak, for Romance probably Italian but you could be nice to the French and pick Catalan

All slavic languages are bridges with each other. I'd still rather speak in English, but we can at least infer the general meaning most of the time.
Leads to a lot of misunderstandings though, like a Pole telling a Czech that he's looking for his lost child in a shop.

Yes, there's a concept named Lingua Franca. Normally you learn a foreign language, and you have the option to learn the basics of a second one. People living on bordering regions (real close to the border) used to be bilingual.

Is Basque even a real thing anymore? Also these maps seem to be always stuck in the 1950's or something. Nobody speaks Sardinian anymore, for every native Sardinian speaker in Italy, there are 10 Arabic native speakers
