Is 漫画 different from コミック in Japan as a medium?
I have noticed most publishers tend to use comikku instead and the early usage for manga refer to sketch or reference books.

Should I periodically review what I've already read on Tae Kim's guide, or just rush through it? I've been doing the latter but I feel like I don't really grasp every concept, though I feel like I will once I start consuming native media while referring back to it.

just rush through it, you will become aware of the basic grammars and you might connect the dots once you begin reading. If you can't remember something specific you can just go back and check, you're not losing anything, and actually going back and checking after you've seen it in the wild will presumably strengthen your memory about it.
