If you don't have a car, you're not sleeping with a roof over your head. Then, you will be offered shady drugs on a particularly bad day on the streets and get hooked. A few years later you die of an overdose.

The old timey immigrants are the ones that really blow my mind. Imagine going to a new country with nothing but a little bit of money in your pockets and however much clothes you can carry; no reservations, no Uber, no guarantee of a job or even a roof of your head, often not even able to speak English! And then striking out farther, going west, getting your plot of land and building your shack and digging your well, planting your crops and hoping to God for a good harvest and that the Indians don't come raiding. Now if you told people you were going on a trip and didn't have a hotel reservation they'd think you were crazy. Giants walked the Earth in those days.

Why do so many people romanticise lives of poverty and material insecurity? It's horrible being poor. I daydream of being wealthy and eating fancy food every day in my penthouse suite.

they unironically had people organising that shit for them back home
in 1930s my great grandpa who was a miner was literally harassed to go to work in virginia, the recruiters had printed out photos of the houses they would be staying in with them

I can believe that for industrial jobs in the later stages of immigration but the vast majority of pioneers didn't have shit promised to them, there were no "company towns" on the frontier of Iowa

You wouldn't get it. Little things mattering, the promise of making it big but realizing it's the journey that matters not the destination, lived experience that trumps tomes of passed down wisdom... boomers had the right idea, this modern world has though robbed us of it.
