Yes. I hated it by the time I was a senior in high school and went to college in Europe and then lived in many different places. Now I miss it and plan to go back someday

Small businesses go up to 500 employees, but even more strictly speaking anything under 250 or 150 is a small business. That leaves a lot of room. Dentist office, car dealership, some local distribution center, promoter agency, etc.. this is how many of those people make money in every country, not griding some corporate ladder as an investment banker but actually owning a HVAC business or something.
