China is a weird place. Its development outpaced its culture. There are some very comfy T1 and even T2 cities with some amazing infrastructure that surely has to be the best in the world, but the people often act like third world savages. Constantly cutting in lines, littering, smoking in your face, talking and yelling loudly across the street, disobeying all traffic laws. There is also no criticism of the government allowed, especially by a foreigner. Even saying something like "I like Japanese food more than Chinese food" will make people seethe uncontrollably. If you don't mind this type of culture then it's not a bad place to live, but there is a reason why you see people fighting to live in Korea and Japan and not China. Taiwan is a lot more laidback even if it is not as flashy as the T1 cities and you make less money. You can really feel the difference in mindset and lifestyle.
