Any quality of life can be satisfying if one is provided with the proper mental resources. The simple poorman idealized in the Bible and in the medieval mendicant orders is the poorman who knows the Word of God by heart, studying and praying diligently in private. The state and the church need to be doing a lot more to lift people up spiritually if they want to avoid terrible social unrest
