I just learned that americans get very angry at you if you tell them you have an outdoor cat.
They think cats need to be locked in houses and they are happier that way

if you don't have enough space for one or can't contain them, then don't adopt. it's as absurd as the concept of an "outdoor dog" that roams around the streets by its own

my female cat was outdoors and mainly hanged around in my gardens. Lived to 20 and had a happy life.
My neighbours cat basically spends 18 hours a day hunting in the nearby open field. Keeps hunting rodents like he is in a trance

My dad's outdoor cat just got killed by something and he's been acting distraught over it but I'm just like... wtf do you think happens to a little cat left outside? Their lifespan is objectively half of an indoor cat.

Yeah some do, but it beats being in a prison all their life. From my experience it's mostly unneutered male cats who get hit the most during mating season.
My neighbours tomcat got hit like that, but survived. He is more careful now.

Also should mention I don't think cats in big cities should be outdoors - people there shouldn't own cats in the first place (unless they have a big garden)

we had an outdoor cat (had), grew up outside and took him in. one day he went outside like he often did and never came back. we're absolutely clueless. castrated, anti flea treatment regularly, combed, we're not negligent
not the first stray we've taken in, but one 404-ing like that was a first and hopefully the last time

Indoor cat lives a long healthy life.
Outdoor cat gets run over by a car or shot with a crossbow by some kid or captured and used in Santa Muerte sacrifice rituals by creepy Mexican families, or as kittens they get eaten by an owl or coyote.

I've had so many outdoor cats just disappear and only ones I brought inside actually lived. (A Mexican family brought noncastrated cats into the neighborhood that bred like crazy and then pretended not to know where they came from when everyone complained)

It isn't just people. Raccoons, dogs, other cats, disease, these things exist. Some make it past all of these hazards and live to 15 but many don't. It's far safer indoors. Wild animals simply don't live long, didn't realize this was foreign knowledge to some.

I've never heard such things happening. Getting run over maybe, people pay attention to cats but sometimes you can't avoid it. But there aren't any real predators here in yuropistan so it's probably a lot safer. Our cat is 13 and he still lives outside most of the time. We live in a very rural area so it might help.
