when the kanjI gets too complex it might be easier to search by parts, Jisho has a button on the bottom right corner called "radicals" (on mobile) where you can select each part and a list appears with kanji that contain that part. For example 襲 can be looked up with 衣 立 and 月, you might not be familiar with some parts but you might recognize 立 and 月, right? If you take your time it might be easier, and it'll only get easier for you as you progress

The complexity of a character has nothing to do with how it sounds. It’s just an annoying result of how Chinese characters developed in the first place.

The theory behind Chinese is that you start out with a small number of pictures representing some basic things in nature or abstract concepts like "tree", "river", "mountain", "middle", "over", "under", then simplifying them into symbols (木,川,山,中,上,下), then, with enough of these basic symbols, you can spell out every word approximately. Like a rebus puzzle. So 木 "mu" can stand for tree, but can also spell out the similar sounding word "mu" "bath".

The big problem with this is ambiguity. They needed to be careful when choosing which words to borrow. So to spell out cat ("mrew"), they couldn't use a symbol related to animals or people. It needed to be something that rarely gets confused with cats. So they spelt it with the symbol for weeds 苗 "mrew". Later, they added the symbol for "long spined beast" 豸to the left of it to make it even less ambiguous. That's where we get modern 猫. This is how most chinese characters came about.

The whole process of borrowing characters, trying to use abstract characters, adding symbols to make it less ambiguous and then potentially using those characters as borrowings have led to some ugly characters entering the language.

In your case, looking at wiktionary, to spell "attack" "lyub" they borrowed an abstract character, the clothing counter "lyub" 襲, which, in turn, borrows the the very abstract character 龖 "lüb" "vista of dragon in flight", which is a doubled from the character of “dragon” 龍, but using the single form for simplicity, then adding the symbol 衣 "garment" underneath to make it less ambiguous for the clothing counter meaning.

Just to show you how chinese characters come about through borrowing and possibly adding a "clarifying" character to create a duel "phono-semantic" modern chinese character, here is a table. I ordered like this:

詮, せん, discussion, slon, tsin, (言 + 全 talk-dzon)

Interesting to note how the clarifying symbol (the semantic component) tends to be on the left while the borrowed character (the phonetic component) tends to be on the right. This isn't always the case, but when a chinese or japanese speaker comes across a character they don't know, but they recognize the rightmost part, they will try to pronounce it like that.

Another example of a series of borrowings comes to create a very complex character.

各, "krak", old character for "enter", (夂 "footprint" at an 口 "opening")
路, "ke'raks", street, (足 + 各 leg-krak)
露, "p'raks", dew, (雨 + 路 rain-ke'raks)

Used to spell Japanese つゆ (dew). 21 characters, one of the most complex characters in the Joyo.
The most complex character is 鬱 at 29 characters. This is appropriately used to spell "depression" うつびょう (鬱病).
This is just an example of complex character changes.
The two trees 木 at the top are there because is was originally depicting a man stepping on another man between two trees to depict the "downtrodden" meaning. When the character was borrowed to represent "ceremonial wine", the characters morphed into a jar 缶 and lid 冖, and a chalice with herbs 鬯 with three added strokes 彡 was added, creating the modern character

the entry in the 説文解字 for 鬱 is:

𩰪 is an obscure character for a concoction of fragrant herbs, as the 説文 also explains:

the most likely original meaning for 鬱 is the "lush; luxuriant; exuberant; dense; thick" meaning, as in 鬱蒼, 鬱然, and the "depressed" meaning is derived from this, in the sense of the mind being clouded

In A Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese (Revised Edition) by Paul W. Kroll, 鬱 is defined in this way:

The wiktionary explaination is convincing because it includes illustrations of the supposed original oracle bone characters. But who knows if that is just a reconstruction too.

At 10 seconds a card it would take 15 minutes. The beginning is the worst though because you can't recognize kanji easily and you don't know the phonetic components well so I wouldn't be surprised if it takes you longer than that. If it takes you more than 20 seconds for a card just mark it fail and get better at recalling it faster, you don't want to have a bunch of cards that take you a minute to recall because then you'd spend several hours a day. Failing it and quickly relearning it is faster in the long term and will improve your reading too.
After your first few VNs it feels like a breeze compared to when you're just doing anki.

You'll end up trying to mine the kaishi words because they're so stupidly common. Every time you try to mine a kaishi card just reposition it to 0 so it's the next word you learn in the queue before the ones you haven't seen.
I do this frequently on the more common words when reading so my new cards will be relevant to whatever VN I am currently reading instead of something I read a year ago.

Haha actually Kanji recognition is the easiest part of Japanese for me by far. I’ve done about a year of college Mandarin. Remembering the Kanji, taken at a slow pace with minimal time investment, feels like magic with how straightforward and powerful it is too.

It’s remembering readings that have literally nothing to do with the components of the character that makes me want to bang my head against the wall. In Chinese the phonetics much more regularly line up with characters. But I’m grading myself on remembering the reading. So my two struggles are that kana only words are hard to recall meanings, while kanji cards are super easy to recall meanings but readings remain elusive. I’m optimistic though, I had a couple minutes where I got to write the sample sentences on a couple problem cards out with furigana and I found it helped a lot. I will stay the course. I’m going to do that for my problem cards at least once per card from now on and for new cards at least when I have the time to really sit down and thoroughly study.

I think maybe I have a retarded short term memory if it’s the norm to nail those or I’m fundamentally fucking up how I commit these to memory because it’s usually taking me multiple times per card to get it to the level that it now goes to the next day, for example, good pushes it back a few minutes, good again pushes it back one day, which means for a new card even ideally I have to review it twice unless I spam Easy.

Do you have any advice for just basically committing a card to short term memory? My experience in life shows that I have a very strong long term but a weak short term memory, extremely difficult time remembering faces, but easy time studying my field if I have gone over something thoroughly for example.
