And yes, you have to be careful about rabies. I've become trained at this point to identify if a dog is rabid. You usually see one of the following behaviours:
1. Walking funny
2. Salivating
3. Either extremely silent or constantly growling
4. Shivering
You have to be on the lookout when you're walking. If a dog shows these symptoms simply turn back and walk away.
It is simply not worth getting bit by a stray dog. Yes, rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin exists that have a fairly good chance of saving you, but there's a slim chance even these can fail and the virus made it to your brain. Human body is complex.
The maid that used to work in my house when I was 6 years old got bitten by a stray dog. My mother paid for her rabies injection but 6-7 months after she reported fever and hydrophobia. Didn't even last 3 days.
More than crime Indian streets you have to be wary about stray dogs.
