That was possible because the US invoked article 5 due to 9/11 attacks which happened on US north american soil. The article 5 only applies to territories in europe or north america, so even if the yanks to stir up the chink hornet nest and get a couple of bases in the pacific whacked, NATO is not obligated to help.
