Instead they thought they could simply let the Whites beat the Reds alone, then swoop in to beat the Whites themselves.

Really everything that happened to them from 1939-1989 was their own fault.

Just to humour you I googled this shit, and it was because Denikin refused to recognise a future independent Poland. He LITERALLY told them "The Bolsheviks will collapse any day now, and then I'll come back and kill you" or something to that effect. Now, despite being a staunch anticommunist from a pre WW2 landowner and early industralist family, it's hard for me to say that Whites didn't deserve to lose because of dogshit attitudes like this. Tsarist Russian elite was degenerated beyond belief, they were bound to lose.
