There is an account of a bengali guy who visited england in the 18th century, possibly the first indian account of europe. He talks about how the locals thronged around him, asked him a million questions, touched his clothing intrusively, kept inviting him over to their homes, and women would compete to ask him for a dance at parties.

It's crazy that once upon a time, this was how rare indians were in the UK. They were only known from books, as people living in a far away mysterious land. You could go your entire life without ever seeing an indian

My piano teacher lived in an apartment she rented from an old woman. She said that the old woman didn't believe that black people existed, that she thought UN soldiers were just playing around by smearing themselves with oil or shoe polish.
