I barely fucking swim after getting out of high school.

>high school has a pool so we'd swim constantly
>after graduating high school, swim a handful of times a year
>in university, girlfriend had a pool at her condo, so we'd swim every few weeks or so, before we broke up going to different cities
>post uni I'd swim maybe 3-4 times a year, if you can count "splashing in the water at the beach"
>gym has a pool, but you don't go to the gym for the pool, and you get too tired after working out anyways

it really is just endurance. anyone can get decent at swimming by simply just showing up and swimming for about a month. it’s not like weightlifting where you constantly need to do more, you simply need to get in the water and swim ~2500-5000m daily and you’ll be in killer shape. i never got fat/out of shape because i simply never stopped swimming after high school.

while doing freestyle, you can technically breathe however much you want. that said, for optimal breathing patterns, try to breathe on the side while your arm is just above your head, and breathe every other stroke on opposite sides.
>R arm stroke, breathe
>L arm stroke, don’t breathe
>R arm stroke, breathe
again you can mess with this as much as you want, and when i was on a state level team, we would concoct practices with minimal breathing altogether, at a certain point we would do a 500m free and try to only breathe 3 times every lap on opposite sides. it would literally be
>push off wall, dolphin kick as far as possible
>surface and begin stroking
>R arm breathe when you feel you have to
>L arm no breathe, R arm no breathe, L arm no breathe, R arm breath, L arm no breath, R arm breathe
>flipturn and do it again

btw, sounds like you might have an issue with staying torpedo-like
if you want to change this, try to keep your body as narrow as possible when swimming. your knees should be almost touching, and your hands should be coming into the water directly in front of your body. if you want to practice this, try getting a kickboard and when you push off the wall, do dolphin kicks until you tire and switch to freestyle kicking. practice your pushoffs too, keep your body tight and as narrow as possible.

first try not to breathe on your first stroke. not only is it killing the momentum of your push off, but it’s making your body try to work harder to keep you up with relatively little upward momentum. try to take an extra stroke at least before your first breathe, and make sure you are kicking as well so you don’t have an issue with sinking during your breath. i notice a lot of novice swimmers have an issue with their breathing NOT being part of their stroke when in reality it can actually help your momentum. when breathing, try not to turn your whole body over, but just pivot your head. this way you arent gaining more drag/losing energy from rotating your whole body. alongside that, make sure your stroke stays low, don’t reach high. the lower and more compact your body is, the easier it will be to make small maneuvers like a regular breathing pattern

also, don’t lift your head out of the water when breathing. it might feel uncomfortable but the more streamline you keep your body throughout your whole stroke, the easier it will be to avoid sinking, slowing, or tiring out. when breathing, turn your head 90 degrees and do not lift it, keep your mouth just above the water line and pay attention to your kick. keep your breath short, if you need more you can stop to catch your breath when you finish this lap.

it’s beyond just cardio. it works your entire body. i mean yeah, you’ll never be bulky, but you won’t be skinny either. i’ve got a swimmer’s body myself (wide ribs, big hands,
, wide shoulders, narrow waist, long legs) and swim had always been a very good way to maintain low body fat with high lean muscle. again, you’ll never be jacked, but you’ll never be a twink either.
also,
>i'll always be mediocre at it
this is simply untrue. it’s like saying you will always be mediocre at lifting. you can be a good swimmer no matter WHAT so long as you are 1) not disabled and 2) are willing to practice at least 4 times per week. seriously, i took a huge break from it for years and came back to it and while i had no endurance, my stroke was still there and within a month i was back to some level of normalcy. if you’re really interested in it (again, you will need to know that yes, you’ll build muscle but it will be lean) you can do it

i have slim shoulders, long legs (which swimmer types don't have regardless of your cope lol), and eternally low bf%. in water my legs can never stop moving or i sink, even when lying on my back. you wouldn't get it.
sure, i could become a great swimmer compared to people who aren't even trying, but among even semi-serious hobbyists i would always be hopelessly outclassed. just as you would be in a group of, for example, sprinters.
we all have different predispositions. i'm okay with that (and also not that into swimming anyway precisely because it sucks to suck).

Any anime revolving a sports does, there's a very famous anime named Captain Tsubasa where the football (soccer for you) fields looked like they where 10+ miles long.

I remember watching Yowamushi Pedal when I was into cycling and it was fucking hilarious, I wonder if anybody of the staff working on it has ever climbed a mountain pass.
