Yakutsk is located in Tuymaada valley on the banks of river Lena and traditionally local people have always been non-migratory pastoralists herding cows.

To be fair Yakutsky is a relatively unknown place for even people who do study their geography. I know Western Russia quite well, Caucasus somewhat, but anything after the Urals is all a blur to me. I know Yakutsk isn't quite that far, but it isn't well known. I can point Novgorod Seversky, Pskov, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tula, Rostov, and Kursk reliably. Everything else I'm gambling if I have a blank map.

Back to reindeer, I thought you guys had a big hunting culture or something, with everyone having to go hunt a bear as a traditional measure of adulthood (for men). Not sure if I'm confusing you guys with another region or if it's more bullshit from people on this board..

And yes, that building wasn't that bad. It was initially a dormitory/communal apartment building, but as people were moving out, the remaining people just annexed their rooms into their own flats. We also did that. Until the age of 4 me and my parents all lived in one room, and the toilet, the guestroom and the kitchen were shared with neighbors. Then my parents sent me to my granny for 4 months and when I came back all the neighbors were gone and we were suddenly living in a relatively big apartment (we annexed their rooms)

So that is true then, I'd read some threads on other boards and the Russians all confirmed that Yakutia was the only place with a growing population. Not sure why the rest of Russia is doing so bad, but I could say the same for the place where I live. I'd to visit Russia for the Golden Ring and to tour the historic cities, how is the attitude towards Americans right now? I know some Americans have gone recently and there were no problems, but I'm wondering if the trouble will come from the government or the citizens. The Russians that come here are mostly liberashkas, but some aren't and nobody gives them trouble.

As for the attitude towards Americans, it's alright. You definitely shouldn't expect any problems from Russian people, we like foreigners who take interest in Russia.
The government institutions probably pay extra attention to all who come from the west right now, but as long as you don't break any laws you'll be alright.

Just in time for another question: what meat dishes do russians eat? WIkipedia didn't have many, but it looks like Russia doesn't have a heavy, meat-focused dishes like barbecue or steak. Lots of sausage, but even at the Russian stores here I don't see much variety.

US grilling culture is just a but too cumbersome for Russia. The grill is massive. The afford a grill you need a dacha or a house with land, and you also need the grill itself which is also quite expensive.
Shashlik is made in a type of grill called mangal which can be very cheap (starting at 10 dollars) and can also be very light so you can carry it around. That makes shashlik available to everyone. Poor students can buy a mangal, a bunch of coals and meat and just gather in a forest or in a park.
