Australia was extremely British for the time and we were of course allies, so people felt safest here and like they could assimilate to it the easiest. We did also have a lot of Euro immigration prior during the gold rush of the 1800s and had entire towns founded by Germans and other Euros, so people could easily find their own local communities to be comfortable with (which is also what my family did at the time too).
I imagine America had a similar thing happen but I don't really know, all I know about is what happened here since I had family that experienced what I've mentioned.
