We never were a Spanish colony
The king of Spain also held the titles to these lands but we were not administratively a colony or part of the kingdom of Spain
The catholics are the descendants of the people that never converted to protestantism in the first place

because all the protestants secularised while the Catholics largely retained their faith. Its a pretty common trend in countries where "classical protestantism" (Lutherans, Calvin's, anglicanism) is or was the dominant religion

The second the Spanish king raised taxes and persecuted non-catholics our rebellion started
Catholics were officially "tolerated" by the new calvinist regime (they had to have their churches and practices out of sight and were not eligible for higher political and military office)

no one cares, religion is dead here. Christians are rare, and among them protestants are even rarer. Still, prots are generally seen as weird and anti-fun

They used to be 10% of the population until the sun king revoked the edict of nantes in 1685 and imposed catholicism on the whole kingdom. Most of them were southerners

What would you say is the spirituality or pattern of thought that replaced religion with the common ethnic French population?
In other words what do French normies believe in?
I personally just feel a deep connection with the land and my people, but then again I live in a rural village. People from the city might not relate to my experience.

I don't even know how it's possible to make this picture. Catholics as opposed to protestants officially condemn homosexuality and transgenderism. You won't find transgender priests but you'll find plenty in prot denominations. Also protestants in the USA in particular are notoriously judeophiles, it's literally a meme about your country

it feels weird having to explain it to another european because i believed all europeans were the same about this, but no one thinks about religion, spirituality, life after death, etc. We don't care, it's completely out of our minds. The general feeling is total indifference to this sort of stuff. Anybody slightly spiritual is a minority. There is no large spiritual trend among french people that replaces christianity.

If people feel attracted to this sort of subject, they naturally gravitate towards christianity, very specifically catholicism, because we understand that it's the religion we used to believe in, and it's everywhere. We still have crosses everywhere, churches are part of our background and architecture and we maintain them well even if they are empty. I mean we were literally christians before we were french so it's hard to take it out, and it's not like anybody is trying anyway. The animosity of atheists only exist in christian countries like the USA. Atheists don't exist here

Spirituality and whacky semi religious beliefs are common here
A common phrase you'll hear from normies here is: "I dont believe in a God (like the Abrahamic version) but I do believe in a higher power/powers from nature"
