Or when you're in your first year you make an effort to get to know people who are about to graduate and then by the time you graduate you already have connections. in 2017 when I got my first "real job" it was a junior position with a salary that was almost 100% of the "national mathematical average" which in Poland is grossly overestimated due to how they count it.
