Coincidentally, this is one of like three occupational surnames used in Norwegian, the other two are Munch (monk) and Bonde/Bonden (farmer).

to add to that smiths had a higher survival rate because they would often stay in the village/town and make weapons instead of actually going out there and fighting, same for their sons who would learn the craft

Not really. A country would need a somewhat steady amount of smiths. If too many died new would take over. If there were enough already some of the smiths sons would get other jobs.
Besides you could change lastname or not have any at all back then. In Denmark we only had lastnames made mandatory and hereditary by law in the 1800s.

It's just common jobs that were a lot of. Survival rates and other nonsense weren't the deciding factors here..

They still are. The Holocaust is literally the same punishment as those that God used in The Old Testament against them. Remember the Exodus? Dudes were wandering around the desert for more than 40 years and God made everyone die except for their children because he wanted to punish his own people. And after the punishment they got their reward (The Promised Land). And the same happened in the previous century

I was going to say that I only saw people with Kovač, not the other variants.
For Slovenia it would be weird if it was Kovačevič. Kovačič sounds more likely but just Kovač is probably more common everywhere.

Portuguese Ferreira and Italian Ferrari are the equivalent to our 'Herrero' they are making reference to working with iron (Ferrum).

On the other hand I thought it would be rather "Molinero" than "Molina", your "Miller" or German "Müller"

Ferreira is a feminine noun, Ferreiro is the masculine noun.
Being the feminine noun it's more likely the name was given to people living near or working in an iron mine (ferreira), not blacksmiths

An iron mine is called ferreira.
Portuguese don't have names based on occupation.
It's more likely ferreira is a name for people living near an iron mine, like Costa is for people living in the coast, and Silva is for people living in the woods.

Name a single Portuguese family name that is based on an occupation other than this supposed ferreira (feminine noun btw).

You don't find it strange that ALL those occupations use the masculine noun, except for ferreira?
Anonymous Portugal No.212398859 [Report]
>>212398674
no. also an iron mine is literally an iron mine. it's not called "ferreira". if anything ferreira is tied to the geography of a river. example: Ferreira do Zêzere. it's not in the dictionary.
