Why is India so filthy when their religion is so specific about cleanliness and purity and so scared of pollution?

I'm pretty sure something got fucked up in the last centuries and their society declined heavily, because european travellers in the early modern period didn't mention anything about their hygiene, instead they were the ones seen as gross by the hindus

Is it just getting more filthy with time? Like are they actually building dumps and removing the waste, or is it just perpetually building up?

to my knowledge they're not doing much about it. I think they really just put their hands in front of their eyes and pretend not to see it. I have never seen in my life an indian acknowledge the state of their land

India has a modern garbage crisis born of explosive urban growth, industrial waste, plastic consumer goods, and underfunded municipalities. Religious ideas about purity never addressed polyethylene or diesel soot, so they offered no defence when the trash tide arrived. Infrastructure is catching up (more composting, landfill biomining, more numerous dustbins, trained sweepers, etc.,) but with half a billion urban residents the street-level optics will take another decade to match the rhetoric.
This is how Indian streets looked in the 1800s, before industrial waste, plastics, and overcrowding became widespread, for example.

Art of India, based on the travels of Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950).
These paintings and photos are snapshots of what India looked like back then without plastic, industrial waste, and overcrowding.

Just pick up the trash
It's not that difficult
5% of your population is unemployed
Just have them pick up some trash and put it on a truck to take to a dump and it'll be done in a few months

In Delhi there's a trash pile so large it needs warning lights for aircraft.
