Are Canadians culturally closer to Brits or to Americans?

Americans. People who live in BC are similar to those who live in Washington. Those who live in the Maritimes are close to those who live in Maine. It's common sense.

Americans with a lot of old world sensibilities. A lot less California and New York than we seem to want to portray ourselves on TV, and a lot less Irish redneck than the way Americans seem to want to portray us on TV.

That's usually more of a financial decision.
Travel's cheaper. Work visas go away if you get citizenship (and they are a serious pain in the ass for Canadians unless you have "Extraordinary ability in the arts, athletics, or the motion picture/television industry" worthy of an O2 visa). Depending on the state of residence and states most often performed in, taxes can be as much as 50% lower. It's nearly impossible to even make a living as an artist in Canada alone - most stops on a tour would be at least 8h apart if you're not making a one-way trip coast to coast, basically mean you're burning everyone out, sleeping in shifts while driving, or while the bus is in motion if you can afford to rent a tour bus. Plus in certain seasons you have to contend with snow, floods, or moose on the ONE FUCKING ROAD.

We break in the US, Europe, or Japan. Almost never here. We have to import ourselves back home.

Acadiens and Oirish. The accent in some places (St. John's, some smaller cities in Nova Scotia) isn't even watered down - it's just Irish.

More American by far. We drink coffee and not tea, are car-centric, sound closer to Americans than the British, have a stronger sense of individual freedoms than most Europeans, and share a great deal of media.

Our redneck accents (the stereotypical mockery of how Canadians sound) are definitely more Bri'ish. Some of the accents and dialect between Sudbury and Winnipeg is straight outta Bristol.

Yep. You got us. The entire country is that one Walmart and McDonald's at an intersection with sideways lights. There definitely isn't a Tim Horton's out of frame to the left. Just Walmart on the right, and McDonald's on the left for 6700km along one small highway.

There's more to the country than Tim Horton's and Brampton. Both of which should be avoided at all costs, and their inhabitants left to overdose or starve to death.

Two (2) of which are on fire. This pleases you in ways your mimicry of early nineteen-forties (1940's) Germany never could.
