it’s the reason why <ä> exists! in german they used to write the letter <e> like two vertical lines. so they wrote <e> above the letter <a>, but because of how that letter looked, it eventually simplified into two dots. so <a> with an <e> on top is just the historically accurate <ä>

Chinese actually did have to do that back in the day, except that failing to evade their word filters would have you executed.
Writing an emperor's given name was taboo, so you couldn't use whatever character were in his name, even if it was stupidly common like 民 people/folk.
Can't write it in any book, not even a dictionary, and if your name or surname includes a character like that - well, time to change your name.

A and ä are different letters. They are pronounced differently and having dots on a vowel also changes the meaning of the word.
A Bar is a place where you can drink a beer.
A Bär is a wild and dangerous animal.
Schwul means gay.
Schwül means the weather is hot and humid.

old way of spelling æøå and ü for German. It was meant to shift a, o, u in "e"-direction, and aa is just long a

Scandinavian would have aͤ, oͤ, aͣ
and German would have aͤ, oͤ, uͤ

We still write ä -> ae, ö -> oe, ü -> ue and ß -> ss when we're abroad and don't have our letters on their keyboards. The system is also used for German names in the two machine-readable strips at the bottom of passports and ID cards.

In Esperanto, officially we use ch gh hh jh sh for ĉ ĝ ĥ ĵ ŝ, and just u for ŭ (it only occurs in certain positions so there's no confusion), but a lot of people use cx gx hx jx sx ux instead because x doesn't occur in the normal Esperanto alphabet. This convention originated with programmers who wanted an unambiguously machine-convertible way to represent Esperanto text in ASCII, but then it spread outwards into general usage, because there are a lot of Esperanto-speaking programmers. (Personally, I prefer to just do constrained writing and avoid words containing the accented letters, if I can't use the proper accent marks.)
