What went so wrong with Japanese electronics and technologies?

20 years ago, companies like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp, Sanyo, Casio, Hitachi, Olympus, Seiko, Sharp, NEC etc dominated the electronics industry but today they are a mere shell of what they used to be like

>refrigerators, washmachines, vacuums, batteries, and air conditioners
>Laundry machines, including washer-dryers

Either way my answer stays. It was protectionism insulting their industries so they dominated the domestic market. They were more coddled than US auto makers, and combined with a conservative business culture of course they didn't try to innovate that hard.

True, but if they weren't coddled by their government's policies they'd have been forced to adapt to keep their domestic market. The 1:1 between Japanese computer and appliance industries and American auto industry is funny really.

>refrigerators
Became completely unprofitable as China and Korea dumping cheap products below cost. Everything China and Korea touch ends up the same way. (Like shipbuilding).

>washmachines
Ditto

>vacuums
Still Japan is the market leader today. I don't think there any rivals in this industry, since pneumatic is a niche and unsung hero-like business.

>batteries
All guk makers ended up in the red (lol), while Panasonic is making a profit by supplieing to Tesla. Even iPhone's battery is still produced by Japan.

>air conditioners
Daikin has just become the market leader, beating Chinese makers in high-end section. In the first place, the compressors that Chinese makers use are produced at Toshiba's China factory.

>Laundry machines
Same as other China and Korea dumping fields.

>lithium-ion and flash memory your phone uses
Still huge market share Japan keeps, as iPhone 16 and 17 use Japanese suppliers.

>Hitachi Building Systems
Idk much about this, but Hitachi is an infrastructure titan, they are like No.2 company in the world.

>DSLR cameras
Ended up Sony's domination. All phone camera, car cameras, robot cameras are now produced by Sony.

>fiber optic communications
Dominating tech patents, probably still the industrial leader today.

>the first bullet train (Shinkansen)
Chinks lied to us. Japan allowed China to use bullet train technology only for domestic use, but they ignored and exported their high-speed rails to SEA. This one really leaves bad blood.

>Japanese cellphone
Moved to iPhone's tier 1 supplier jobs.

>PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3
Sony is the market leader in gaming, beating Microsoft's gaming division.

Japanese society abolished the free competition in a free market capitalist system. Instead, it adopted socialism.

Japanese society has spent unlimited amounts of money on welfare, and existing large companies have been given preferential treatment by the government through tax systems, subsidies, and the manipulation of the yen exchange rate.

The so-called silver democracy has reinforced this trend.

As a result, Japanese companies have been left behind by global trends in technology and economics, and have been overtaken by other countries.

Japanese people comfort themselves by reading the so-called "translation blogs" and watching YouTube videos that show how amazing Japan is. Yes, these are copiums.

Capitalism is great. Free competition is great.

The government manipulated the stock prices of Japanes private companies, pumping the enormous amount of tax money. If it's not socialism, what is socialism?

dude, Japan is now poorer than ex-communist eastern European shitholes, there is something seriously wrong with the current generation of working age Japanese, they can't innovate, they can't work, they probably sit all day at home alone and jerk off to anime

GDP is a meme. Market cap reveals a countryโ€™s true weight in the capital-driven world.

Stock Market Capitalization by Country - 2025-05
- China: $9.9T
- Japan: $6.7T
- India: $4.3T
- Taiwan: $2T
- South Korea: $1.7T

Japan's $6.7T market cap is double Germanyโ€™s $2.9T, which will upset GDP purists. Japan punches above its weight in corporate scale, and investor participation.
